NBA Rumors: Philadelphia 76ers coaching shortlist includes Mike D’Antoni
NBA Rumors: Sixers coaching shortlist includes Mike D’Antoni, amongst others
Heading into an offseason that could very well include big changes, one of the first for the Philadelphia 76ers will involve the naming of a new head coach. After losing in the first round to the Boston Celtics, Brett Brown was relieved of his duties and a coaching search, led by Elton Brand, officially had begun.
Roughly a month later, it’s now being reported that Billy Donovan, Mike D’Antoni, and Ty Lue are on the shortlist of potential candidates. They are set for the next round of interviews that will take place with the team.
Donovan and the Oklahoma City Thunder mutually agreed to part ways after the team was eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of the Houston Rockets and Ty Lue is currently an assistant coach for the LA Clippers and coached next to Doc Rivers during the 2019-20 season.

D’Antoni (unsurprisingly) elected to not sign an extension with the Rockets after their season concluded and clearly is open to coaching again right away. He will likely have a number of jobs at his disposal and could ultimately come down to which job he feels suits him best.
Each of these candidates seems like a good fit for the Sixers. They’ve all had varying levels of success in the not-so-distant past in the NBA and are hot names in almost every coaching search. It’ll be interesting to see if there are any other names that emerge over the next few days and/or weeks.
The Sixers need some stability in the locker room and that will begin with their head-coaching position. For as good as Brett Brown was in Philly (whether you agree with his coaching approach or not), his roster outgrew him to a certain extent. It was time for a change for both parties.
As the Sixers attempt to get its ship back on course – and they have the top talent to do so – I can’t stress how important it is that this team finds the right coaching leader.
