Will 2021 be a breakout year for Collin Sexton and the Cleveland Cavaliers?
The Cleveland Cavaliers have begun their minicamp in downtown Cleveland. The Cavs were one of eight teams not invited to Orlando due to their record being so poor. This will be the first actual basketball for this Cavs team since March. With players having shown up, reports have already come out about a few of the young prospects. One, in particular, is about Collin Sexton.
It has been reported that Sexton has put on a significant amount of muscle. The comparison they are throwing out for him is Donovan Mitchell. If these reports are true this could be huge not only for Sexton but for the organization. With a team that is working to rebuild their squad and aim towards making the postseason an interesting question looms.
Is Collin Sexton poised to have a breakout season for the Cleveland Cavaliers?

This year was a tale of two seasons for the Cavaliers. The team never really bought into John Beilein’s system and that experiment ended up being a disaster. Players weren’t responding well to him and you could see the product of this on the court. The relationship became unsalvageable after Beilein accidentally said that his players were playing like “thugs”, but he meant “slugs.”
JB Bickerstaff would be promoted to head coach and things would start to turn around for the Cavs.
The Cavs went 5-6 in the 11 games under Bickerstaff before the season came to a halt. The team looked reenergized under new leadership. One particular player was Collin Sexton. Sexton had a pretty good second year for the Cavs as he averaged 20.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 3 assists per game while having an effective field goal percentage of 51.7 percent.
Sexton’s best basketball however would be played with Bickerstaff calling the shots. In those 11 games, Sexton averaged 25.5 points, 4.2 assists per game while shooting 53 percent from the floor and 43 percent from 3.
Things are looking up for the Cavs as they found a coach that the players respond well too. Unfortunately for them, they weren’t included in the teams that made the trip to Orlando so they haven’t had much of an offseason together. That apparently hasn’t stopped Collin Sexton.
A body transformation could be what Collin Sexton needs to explode in his third year. With the added muscle his ability to take punishment while driving to the rim is going to be significantly increased meaning more chances at the free-throw line for Sexton, who shot 84 percent from the charity stripe this season.
Combine that with how he was shooting from the floor this season and we could see a more elite version of Sexton. With Sexton averaging what he did before the weight increase, the combo guard could be a dark horse All-Star candidate depending on how the team does next season.
Cavs fans have a lot to look forward to this season with their young core, especially if Sexton can make that leap. These offseason workouts are going to be crucial for the Cavs to get in reps and become more familiar with the system and each other. I’m excited to see what’s in store for Collin Sexton in the upcoming season, whenever that may be.
