The Cleveland Cavaliers want to hit the gas on the rebuild

Since LeBron James left the team a couple of summers ago, the Cleveland Cavaliers have been one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference as they began a complete rebuild (by keeping some veterans, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson on the roster). Now, it appears, they’re ready to hit the gas and potentially pull the plug on the slow rebuild.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Cavs want to speed up the rebuild. Which is interesting, to say the least. For one, it’s interesting that the Cavs (if they re-sign Thompson) actually have veterans that could help on that front.

Love and Thompson are two players that have been sought out on the trade block, but also players that the Cavs, for one reason or another, refused to deal away. Perhaps with this in mind.

Heading into the offseason, the Cavs have the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Stemming off this report, it’ll be interesting to see if their approach changes at all. Could that mean that the team is willing to deal the fifth overall pick for a veteran star – perhaps for a player such as DeMar DeRozan or Victor Oladipo?

Or perhaps there’s a player that the Cavs can take at No. 5 overall that they believe will be able to help the team compete in the Eastern Conference this season. It’s difficult to know what this report even suggests.

Among a number of potential options, perhaps this means that the Cavs feel really good about Collin Sexton and Darius Garland? If those two players can make a significant jump in their development in 2021, along with the return of Love and perhaps Thompson, you can make an argument for the Cavs to be in contention for the final playoff spot in the East.

However, those are some very big “ifs.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers have some nice young pieces on its roster. They have a solid veteran presence in Kevin Love. I’m not sure if the Cavs will make a big jump next season, but they have some very encouraging pieces in place.
