The Cleveland Cavaliers should target Obi Toppin in the 2020 NBA Draft

The Cleveland Cavaliers may just be a few pieces away from maxing out their potential. Admittedly so, there have been a few rough patches that the team has suffered since the second departure of LeBron James. Despite that, in the 2020 NBA Draft, they have a golden opportunity to grab a solid player with an all-around game.

Obi Toppin from Dayton would fit well with this rebuilding Cavs team, making a huge contribution in their turnaround.

Toppin has shown that he is a versatile, all-around player that can be relied upon to make big plays. During his time at Dayton, Toppin was the driving force of the team and provided a lot of energy on both ends of the floor. Toppin’s length at 6-foot-9 along with his 7-foot-4 wingspan forces him to use his athleticism to its maximum potential.

Toppin has shown he is great at running the floor. His style is nearly comparable to Amar’e Stoudemire with the way he is on the fastbreak. He also shows the ability to space the floor as he shot 39 percent from behind the 3-point line.

If selected by Cleveland with their fifth overall pick, Toppin could compliment the young backcourt of Collin Sexton and Darius Garland. With Toppin’s versatility, it could potentially allow Garland and Sexton to be able to work comfortably on the perimeter. Toppin could also work in the pick and roll.

Garland has shown to be a good passer when given the opportunity to. Playing alongside Garland could put Toppin in great positions to score the ball.

The future of the Cavs frontcourt looks uncertain in very unprecedented times. Kevin Love continues to age and would probably rather play for a contender. Also, would it be best to ship Andre Drummond to another location? Those are the situations that stand in front of Cleveland and their future of becoming a playoff team.

Adding Toppin to the roster, this just means another young talent that you can build upon for the future. It will be no rush for Cleveland to turn into a contender in the Eastern Conference. There will be enough time to allow their young prospects to blossom into the best of their potential. The Cavs front office seems to understand that building around their young core is what is best for the future.

Obi Toppin could be the missing tool for the Cavs. He’s shown to be an excellent player with a high IQ in college. There will certainly continue to be growing pains as far as how this team figures out how to win. But with Sexton, Garland, and Toppin leading the team, it could mean great things to come in the future for Cleveland.
