Toronto Raptors: 3 reasons why the Raptors need to re-sign Fred VanVleet
Why the Toronto Raptors should re-sign VanVleet: Money championships?
Plenty of suitors will more than likely pursue Fred VanVleet during the free agency period offering lucrative contracts to try and lure him to play for another team. He is considered to be one of the most valuable and sought after players on the market as players like him are considered to be top commodities in high demand.
VanVleet’s decision will ultimately come down to two things – Would he take lesser money now and continue to chase titles while creating a legacy or will he have dollar signs in his eyes and sign for the highest dollar amount a team offers him. President of basketball operations for the Raptors Masai Ujuri has an advantage because he can offer VanVleet both plenty of money and an opportunity to win another title.
He is worth every penny a team can give him, but Ujuri can use his leverage and maybe persuade VanVleet to take a little less money in order for Ujuri to pursue other big-time free agents in the coming seasons giving the Raptors the needed financial flexibility to get the players they need.
Another plus is that everything is still in place for another run at a championship. Big men Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol will also be unrestricted free agents but won’t command the kind of money VanVleet will and Ujuri could sign both back for another season or two. Chris Boucher and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson are also players Ujuri could bring back at a minimum salary.
The Knicks, Pistons, and Suns all have expressed interest in signing a play-making guard in free agency and VanVleet will more than likely receive multiple offers from these teams. At the end of the day, Toronto is the ideal situation for Fred VanVleet and the perfect scenario for him to continue having success.
