Still trying to understand the Billy Donovan to Chicago Bulls move
As we head into the heart of the NBA offseason, one move has continued to stick with me more than the others. Billy Donovan’s departure from the Oklahoma City Thunder and his hiring with the Chicago Bulls. When the NBA resumes play for the 2020-21 season on December 22, many teams will have new faces along the sidelines.
Doc Rivers will be patrolling Philly while his predecessor Ty Lue takes over in Los Angeles, Steve Nash will look to bring the seven seconds or less offense to Brooklyn, Stephen Silas will look to become one of the few coaches James Harden actually likes, and Stan Van Gundy will try again to build a team around a superstar big man in New Orleans.
However, with all these moves that have been made in the coaching ranks up to this point, Billy Donovan’s move still has yet to make any sense to me. Why?

It was reported that he didn’t want any part of a rebuild in Oklahoma City, so why go into an even deeper rebuild in Chicago?
Don’t get me wrong, the pieces are there sure in Coby White, Zach LaVine, Dunn, Denzel Valentine, Wendell Carter Jr., Lauri Markkanen, and lottery picks still incoming, but the Thunder have all those firsts coming back for Paul George so who’s to say the talent influx for the Thunder wouldn’t arrive sooner and possibly better than Chicago’s?
Especially with Sam Presti’s track record.
Look, a change in scenery was probably needed. He made it to the playoffs more times than not, and if it wasn’t for a certain departure, he’d probably have a ring or two in Oklahoma City with me typing a completely different story right now.
But things happened like usual which has left sports fans like myself trying to make sense of every little move. Here’s hoping it was the right move for both Billy Donovan and the Chicago Bulls because I don’t think it was.
