Is trading for Chris Paul the right gamble for the Phoenix Suns?

Apart from the two teams that made the NBA Finals, there might not have been a more impressive team in the NBA’s restart bubble than the Phoenix Suns. Not only did they go 8-0 in the seeding games, but they looked mightily impressive in doing so.

No player was as impressive than Devin Booker, who averaged 31 points, six assists, and five rebounds on 50 percent shooting from the field. Booker not only averaged impressive numbers but hit big shot after big shot for the Suns.

He was arguably the most impressive player in the entire bubble and should’ve likely won NBA bubble MVP. Heading into the 2020-21 season, the Suns will be a trendy darkhorse pick to make the playoffs in the Western Conference, and almost solely based on Booker and the Suns’ performance in the restart bubble.

Should the Suns make a splash during the offseason by adding a star player, those expectations would only grow. According to a recent report, one potential star player that the team could potentially target is Chris Paul.

"[via ESPN]The Phoenix Suns have had discussions about acquiring All-Star point guard Chris Paul from the Oklahoma City Thunder, sources told ESPN.Talks have been ongoing and have continued to gather traction, but there is no deal imminent, sources said."

Question is, would this be a smart move to make for the Suns?

On paper, you can’t help but love the fit. Not only would it make the Suns an interesting team to follow heading into 2020-21, but Paul is a great mentor for Booker. Paul is all about business and winning, something that the Suns have failed to do through the first few seasons of Booker’s career.

Paul could help change the culture and bring some expectations to an otherwise overlooked franchise. Paul would also help ease the pressure off Booker and help take some of the playmaking duties off his shoulders.

Even though Booker has grown as a passer and playmaker over the last couple of seasons, he’s a natural lethal scorer and he’s the best version of himself when that’s his focus. Booker has erupted as a superstar and would only be aided on that front by Paul.

Chris Paul and Devin Booker would almost immediately emerge as one of the best backcourts in the NBA and would catapult the Suns into playoff contention. Paul would also bring competitiveness that could help expedite the development of this young roster, including Deandre Ayton.

This move ultimately comes down to whether or not this will be considered the right gamble for the Phoenix Suns for this moment. Acquiring Chris Paul will likely be costly. That said, with the way Devin Booker has developed over the last couple of seasons, this might be a worthwhile gamble for the Suns. This roster might be ripe for a big splash. And Chris Paul would offer that.
