Fred VanVleet is ready for his payday; will it come from the Toronto Raptors?

During the most recent episode of J.J. Redick’s podcast, “The Old Man and the Three,” newly free agent Fred VanVleet stated his desire of wanting a big payday during this year’s free agency period.

VanVleet is rightfully entitled to this request – he has done nothing but continually proven himself as a winner and leader throughout his ENTIRE basketball career.

"“I’m trying to get paid, man, I’m not shy about that.”"

How could you blame a person for not wanting to provide money to themselves and their family, especially during these unprecedented times? VanVleet wants what he feels he is owed. Some may think his demeanor during the interview was bullish, but Fred has constantly been a professional in terms of team mentality and representation.

This was his first truly open platform to express how it is not just him that is supposed to do the betting – but rather possible suitors as well.

"“I don’t have to tell people that I value winning, like, just look at my story, do your research. I’ve never been on a losing team in my entire life”"

VanVleet tipped his hat to the positive situations that he has come across during his basketball journey – but he has had a big hand in creating those situations, and outcomes, too.

He led Wichita State to multiple winning campaigns. He conducted the Raptors 905 to a G League title. He hit big shots in the closeout game 6 against the Golden State Warriors to help the Raptors win the 2019 Championship.

How should the Toronto Raptors proceed with Fred VanVleet?

VanVleet’s appearance on JJ’s podcast was purposeful and intended to exclaim a direct message. It is now on the Raptors to consider whether an investment in him is the right decision going forward. The team has the flexibility with Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol’s contracts coming off the books – though the Raptors want to stay open for a certain Greek player in next year’s free agency.

Another question is what will happen with Kyle Lowry – his contract ends next season – does he want another big contract? Or would he take less money, stay in Toronto, and allow VanVleet to become the lead floor general? Lot’s of scenarios could play out – especially if certain dominoes fall first.

If it is worth anything, the Raptors should bet on Fred VanVleet even if his floor production stays the same – though there is an inkling of a higher ceiling to come. Jeez, we see organizations invest tons of money into players that never perform or mesh with teammates, coaches, or management, all the time – VanVleet is really a foolproof investment.

Whichever path VanVleet decides to take will be the right decision, and he will continue to uphold his mantra of always betting on himself.
