The Golden State Warriors get bad news on NBA Draft night
The potentiality of a Golden State Warriors return to their Dynastic ways may have been rendered moot on NBA Draft night, when the news came down about 90 minutes before the festivities that shooting guard Klay Thompson had suffered a lower right leg injury during a workout in Southern California.
The only good news here, if any, is that this is not the same leg Thompson had surgery on to repair a torn ACL that forced him to miss the entire 2019-20 season. Immediately there was speculation about what effect this news would have on the Warriors regarding what they would do with the number two pick in the draft.
Well, the Warriors did what the Warriors always do, and they took the guy they had reportedly been eyeing all along in 7-foot 1-inch big man James Wiseman, a center out of Memphis.
While the joy of adding a highly touted young prospect is no doubt running through the Warriors organization, one can’t help but imagine that any celebration must be just a bit diluted given the news received less than two hours prior.
The story was initially broken on Twitter by Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium. That report was then followed up minutes later by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Since the initial report, it has been reported by multiple outlets that the Warriors fear Thompson’s injury may be a ‘significant’ Achilles injury. Everyone around the association is hoping this is not the case, seeing as how Thompson has been out of action since tearing his ACL during the 2019 Finals against the Toronto Raptors.
Hopefully for the sake of Klay Thompson, the Warriors organization, and the fans this injury is nothing more than a bad sprain at most. But, if this is a more serious injury that will push back the return of the splash brothers even yet again, then the Warriors will officially be in scramble mode to find a starting-caliber shooting guard by the start of training camp on December 1st.
