Tristan Thompson

Prediction: LA Clippers

Tristan Thompson has come off the Cleveland Cavaliers’ books. Now what?

Thompson had a fair 2019-20 season. The big man played only 57 games but averaged a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds in those outings.

Tristan has shown a positive impact in past settings when his role was clear, and he was surrounded by star players. He was always a threat on the glass (and can still be) when he shared the floor with the likes of LeBron and Kyrie. The guy can produce…especially when he is motivated.

The Cavs are a bit of a jumbled mess. They still hold onto the contracts of Kevin Love and Andre Drummond, so why bring Thompson back? Scratch that, why would he want to come back?

Thompson is undoubtedly craving some winning basketball where he can contribute and get a fair number of minutes. He made a sizeable chunk of earnings from his previous contract with the Cavs. Agreeing to a smaller contract might not be out of the question for Thompson – especially if he wants to go to a contender.

Cue the LA Clippers.

The Clippers need a reliable starting, or back up, big man. Ivica Zubac played well last season but was run off the court by quick guards. The sixth man of the year winner, Montrezl Harrell, had a bad outing in the playoffs (especially against the Nuggets) but is looking to get a big contract elsewhere in free agency. This leaves an opening for Thompson, who as I said, thrives playing around stars.

He would be a perfect complimentary piece both offensively and defensively alongside Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. He has a prior relationship with the newly deemed head coach, Ty Lue, who knows how to utilize Thompson to his max.
