Charlotte Hornets: Are LaMelo, LaVar, and Michael a match made in heaven?
By Criss Partee
LaMelo Ball might be the perfect fit for the Charlotte Hornets
Now that LaMelo Ball is a part of the Charlotte Hornets franchise, could we possibly get to see the dream one-on-one matchup of, LaVar Ball vs team owner Michael Jordan?
Back in 2017 at the height of oldest son Lonzo Ball’s hype coming out of UCLA, Papa Ball told USA Today that back in his heyday he “would kill” Jordan in a game of one-on-one.
To that, Jordan said:
More from Sir Charles In Charge
- Dillon Brooks proved his value to Houston Rockets in the 2023 FIBA World Cup
- NBA Trade Rumors: 1 Player from each team most likely to be traded in-season
- Golden State Warriors: Buy or sell Chris Paul being a day 1 starter
- Does Christian Wood make the Los Angeles Lakers a legit contender?
- NBA Power Rankings: Tiering all 30 projected starting point guards for 2023-24
"“You’ve got to understand the source.”"
Ball’s assertion probably did not deserve that much of a response in the first place.
For the majority of 2017 and into 2018 we heard a lot from the patriarch of the Ball family, but to say that he overshared at times would be the understatement of the decade.
In the past couple of years though we have heard less and less from LaVar. This sudden vow of silence from Ball seemingly coincided with Lonzo being traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the New Orleans Pelicans after LeBron James’ first season in LA.
In all honesty, this was probably the best move for Lonzo’s career, even if Papa was not a fan of the trade.
But we must give credit where it is due. LaVar raised these two kids into young me and now both Lonzo and LaMelo are top three picks in the NBA. Lonzo went No. 1 to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017 and LaMelo No. 3 by the Hornets in 2020. The first time two siblings have been top three selections in NBA draft history.
For the criticism of LaVar and his sons as well, he not only got both into the NBA but they both turned out to be top draft picks at that. How many parents out there would not take this outcome for their children?
Say what you want about Lonzo and LaMelo as far as their game on the court or personalities off the court, one thing you cannot take away is the fact that they have both become successful young men in their young lives, due in big part to their father.
Now, if we can only get this game of one-on-one popping between LaVar and Jordan, all our lives would then be complete.
