NBA Offseason Grades: Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns make bold moves
Chicago Bulls
New Chicago Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas didn’t hesitate in going after Billy Donovan. Donovan, who led Florida to back-to-back national championships before coming to the NBA in 2015, is one of the few coaches to succeed in transitioning from college to the pros.
Since he has been coaching in the NBA he has a .608 winning percentage, going 400-243. Last season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, NBA experts excepted them to finish with one of the worse records in the NBA. Donovan got veteran Chris Paul and the other younger players to buy in, and they made it to the playoffs, almost getting to the second round.
The Bulls have a young team lead by Zach LaVine and Lauri Markkanen but haven’t had success since Jimmy Butler was traded to Minnesota. Donovan has a special power with getting young players to buy in, and he should have a great impact on young players like Coby White, Wendell Carter Jr., Daniel Gafford, rookie Patrick Williams and Markkanen, who’s coming off of a bad year.
The bottom of the East is wide open this year and the Bulls will have a great shot at getting into the playoffs.
