Deandre Ayton, Phoenix Suns

The first overall pick in the 2018 draft, Deandre Ayton is often forgotten due to the meteoric rise of Luka Doncic and Trae Young, both taken only a few picks after him. This does not mean, however, that the Bahamian big man has been a disappointment. Averaging a steady 17 points and 10.7 rebounds per game throughout his first two seasons, the post-oriented Ayton is proof that the traditional center isn’t obsolete quite yet.

Phoenix’s acquisition of Chris Paul via trade will make life much easier for everyone on their roster, Ayton most of all. The future hall of famer has a tendency for making the most out of his big teammates. Just ask Ayton’s namesake, DeAndre Jordan. Paul’s elite playmaking will be a joy to watch paired with the former Arizona Wildcat on the pick and roll.

The Suns look poised to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2010 and appear committed to building around the tandem of Ayton and Devin Booker. The former has had a sneakily good start to his career, and next season might just be the one where he breaks out and reminds the world why he was chosen first in his draft.
