Has Steph Curry sparked the Golden State Warriors?

After losing their first two games of the season in dramatic fashion, critics began to question whether this year’s Golden State Warriors team was legit.

Questions began to swirl about whether the Warriors have enough talent in order to qualify for the postseason and whether they will be able to compete in a very competitive Western Conference.

But more importantly, everyone has been trying to figure out what the deal is with Stephen Curry? Has he lost a step after missing the majority of last season? Is he still capable of being the leader of this Warriors team? Is he still an elite level MVP caliber player?

All of those questions were answered as Curry scored a career-high 62 points over the weekend against the Portland Trail Blazers in only 36 minutes of action on 31 shot attempts. Curry also connected on eight 3-pointers on 50 percent shooting from downtown while scoring 21 points in the first quarter and 31 total in the first half and then turned around and scored 31 more in the second half.

Curry is currently second in the NBA in points per game behind James Harden averaging 32.3 a contest while shooting an efficient 46 percent from the field. Curry’s performance has been the best of any other player so far in this early season as he seemed focused on sending a strong message to the critics and the rest of the league putting them on notice.

These same critics should have known better than to count out the 2-time MVP as he displayed the true heart of a champion as he has proved the doubters wrong thus far. In order for the Warriors to sustain this success, Curry must remain consistent with these kinds of performances because his team is depending on him now more than ever before.

Even though he is without his partner in crime Klay Thompson, Curry is still one of the best (if not the best) points guards in the NBA. This is what we expect to see out of Curry on a game-to-game basis. He won’t score 60 points every night, but this performance proved that he is still dangerous and still very capable of single-handedly dismantling an opponent with his playmaking and shooting prowess.

Curry is good for the NBA and it’s a breath of fresh air to see him back in action on the court smiling and having fun again. If the rest of Curry’s teammates can provide the support he needs and takes some of the pressure off him by being active on the defensive end and pushing the pace making the opponents play at their tempo, then the Warriors become a team nobody wants to play.

This isn’t the same type of championship-caliber team we are used to seeing in Golden State but they can make it work with Curry leading the way and this recent game should be just a sample of how great he will be this year.

The best players perform their best whenever they are criticized and scrutinized as Curry responded to his critics with a resounding showing of greatness. What makes Curry so special is the various ways he can score. Not only is he dangerous with the ball but he’s even more lethal without it as he comes off and around screens as he catches and shoots the ball with ease.

All he needs is that split second to release his picture-perfect jump shot. He also makes defenders look foolish in isolation with his handles, ball fakes, and ability to score from anywhere on the floor. There is no doubt that in the event Curry has a bad game or begins to struggle, the critics will be back to discredit his 62-point game but they should know better than to write him off so quickly.

Monday night, Curry followed up his historic game with 30 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists in a blowout win against the Sacramento Kings and if he continues putting up these types of numbers, the Warriors should be just fine.

Sure as Curry flashes his signature smile of his often, he will surely have the last laugh. He is just too great of a player and will eventually find ways to transcend his game and his team. The great players always do.
