Rebuild time

The Klay Thompson injury might have very well signaled an end to the Warriors dynasty.

What a beautiful time in NBA history was the coming together of Klay Thompson, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green. Steph and Kaly will forever go down as the greatest shooting backcourt in NBA history and it isn’t even close.

While it’s sad to potentially say goodbye to the Golden State Warriors as we currently know them, it doesn’t mean that a new contender can’t rise from the ashes.

This season for the Warriors is more than likely going to be a wash. The Klay injury pretty much crippled any chances they have of making a meaningful impact in the playoffs.

Like last season, don’t be surprised if the Warriors decide to throw in the towel early (obviously because of numerous injuries) and potentially tank the rest of the season and potentially land two lottery picks in 2021.

The D’Angelo Russell trade might have just been a blessing in disguise for the Golden State Warriors. To start the season, the Timberwolves are near the bottom of the Western Conference. This is mainly due to Karl-Anthony Towns wrist injury which has limited his play.

You can expect the Timberwolves to be better once Towns comes back but it is still likely that they will be a lottery team as the Western Conference has playoff contenders everywhere.

If the Warriors manage to bottom out and “tank” they could have a high lottery pick, through no fault of their own, the Timberwolves might not be strong enough to get out of the lottery.

With the Timberwolves pick being top 3 protected this season, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that the Warriors potentially land two top 10 picks in the 2021 NBA Draft.

A scenario could occur where the Warriors land two prospects such as Jonathan Kuminga and Cade Cunningham. Alongside James Wiseman, prospects like Cunningham and Kuminga would give the Warriors a long term future beyond Curry and Klay.

It would also give the Warriors three players on rookie deals.

Adding young players such as this would allow for the Warriors to reload not reboot completely when the time comes.

Steph’s contract expires in two years. He could come back on a reduced salary which would allow for the Warriors to bring in further reinforcements to help. The Warriors over the next two seasons could look to get out from underneath Draymond Green’s contract which frees up additional space.

Tanking this season gives the Warriors a better chance at a long-term future. This current Warriors team is similar to the Lakers post-Shaq. Kobe dragged them to the playoffs only to lose early on.

This Warriors team has Steph to drag them to the playoffs but they aren’t built to win with Klay injured. Tanking gives the Warriors a long term future, getting bounced out at the 1st hurdle in the playoffs does not.
