It appears Marcus Smart avoids a major injury for the Boston Celtics

While the Boston Celtics have struggled over the past few games, with back-to-back close losses to the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers, it seemed as if they were going to be dealt with even worse news regarding Marcus Smart.

However, at least for the time being, it appears they’ve avoided a worst-case scenario outcome for Smart. After going down in the game against the Lakers, and not being able to put weight on his leg, it sounds like Smart has avoided a bad injury.

Smart is expected to miss a few weeks with calf injury, but when the injury first took place it seemed much worse when it initially took place.

Before his injury, Smart was playing an expanded role for the Celtics while averaging 13 points and six assists per game. Even though he was struggling with his shot from both the field and from 3-piont range, but his two-way presence on the team is something that simply can’t be replaced by any other player on the roster.

Losing Smart will certainly hurt the team’s depth, but losing him for an extended time or for perhaps even the season would’ve been something that this team simply couldn’t afford.

The Celtics are 10-8 and just 1.5 games back of the second-seed, red-hot Brooklyn Nets and three games back of the top-seeded Philadelphia 76ers.

Boston will be in the mix for one of the top four seeds in the conference and will be a favorite to make it to the NBA Finals. I’m not sure if this team has enough top-tier fire power to compete with the Nets, but they have the depth that could potentially combat it.

But, for that, they’re going to need a fully healthy team heading into the playoffs. Thankfully, Marcus Smart avoided a potential disaster. Here’s to hoping he can make a quick recovery and will be back in the lineup sooner rather than later for the Boston Celtics.
