The Dallas Mavericks are in desperate need of a legit third option on the roster. Here are the 10 best potential targets in the future.
Every NBA team needs a 3rd option to win a championship. While most people think it has to be a high-level scorer, the Chicago Bulls won six championships with Horace Grant and Dennis Rodman, who were the missing piece they needed.
Grant and Rodman didn’t average 20 points per game, but they played their role, which was rebounding and playing hard nose defense. Last season, Rajon Rondo was the player for the Lakers who was the third option, sometimes his impact was on the defensive end and other times he hit key shots for the Lakers or made the correct pass.
The famous big three’s in the modern era are LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen for the Boston Celtics, LeBron, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love for Cleveland, and recently Kevin Durant, Kyrie, and James Harden who play for the Nets.
While the Brooklyn team is unproven, the others have all won championships.
The Dallas Mavericks are building a team around superstar Luka Doncic, and in 2019 they made a deal with the New York Knicks to team him with Kristaps Porzingis. Last season, the Mavericks looked great, going 43-32 on the season and finishing with the most efficient offense in NBA history.
Playing in the middle of a pandemic has caused many of their key players to miss significant time, due to stricter health and safety protocols. As a result, the Mavs find themselves fighting to stay in the playoff mix out West. A healthy Mavs team should be able to get past the first round, but where the team stands that is the ceiling. They are missing a third option and although there aren’t many tangible players for them to get, these are players that could become available shortly who would surely help them.
