NBA Trade Rumors: The Dallas Mavericks might be shopping Kristaps Porzingis

The Dallas Mavericks entered the season as one of the young Western Conference teams that many believed could make the jump to contention. While most of that fell on the shoulders of Luka Doncic, there were other aspects of this roster to like too.

Though, through nearly the first half of the 2020-21 NBA season, the Mavs have been a big disappointment. Dallas is currently outside the top 8 in the Western Conference and is 5.5 games out of a top 4 seed.

Simply put, the Mavs have been a big disappointment and short of making a big move at the NBA Trade Deadline, it’s hard to see how this team will be able to turn its season around and emerge as that threat that many believed they could be before the season.

Interestingly enough, according to a recent report, management must feel the same about how this season has gone and what it will take to potentially turn it around. The Mavs could be open to trading Kristaps Porzingis, as they’ve reportedly quietly gauged the trade market for his value.

"In fact, Dallas has quietly gauged the trade market for Porzingis, according to league sources, as the Mavericks have begun reevaluating whether the 25-year-old center can truly support Doncic as the second option on a contender. “They’ve kicked the tires on everybody on their roster that’s not named Luka,” one person with knowledge of Dallas’ thinking said. “You know [president of basketball operations] Donnie [Nelson]; they’re always tinkering.”"

While it would still be surprising for the Mavs to make such a big move, it’s certainly an interesting report. The fact that the Mavs are at least willing to see what his value would be on the trade market, suggests that this team feels that a big move might be necessary – and that they’re willing to move anyone on the roster to achieve one.

I’m not sure what type of offer the Mavs would have to receive in order to make the move from gauging the trade interest on Kristaps to moving him, but it’s an interesting thought.

In this second season with the Mavs, Kristaps is averaging 21 points and eight rebounds on 47 percent shooting from the field and 35 percent shooting from 3-point range. He hasn’t been bad for the Mavs, but due to his injury history, it’s not surprising that Dallas would, at the very least, be open to moving him.

Will Kristaps Porzingis be moved at the NBA Trade Deadline? At this point, I’d say it’s unlikely. Though, the Mavs are certainly a team to watch over the next few weeks.
