Would LaMarcus Aldridge be a good backup option for the Boston Celtics?

The Boston Celtics are expected to be active in the days leading up to the NBA Trade Deadline and they’ve already been linked to several potential trade targets. However, one other interesting player that could emerge as a fit for the team is LaMarcus Aldridge.

Aldridge and the Spurs have reportedly agreed to mutually part ways and Aldridge is away from the team as they pursue potential trades with other teams.

"“Some executives around the league who spoke with HoopsHype believe the Boston Celtics could join the mix to acquire Aldridge using their $28.5 million trade exception,” Scotto wrote."

It wouldn’t be surprising for Aldridge to emerge as a backup plan for the Celtics if they fall short on some of their pursuits of the other bigger and more productive names in the trade market.

Over the last few weeks, the Celtics have been linked to several players which have included Harrison Barnes, Nikola Vucevic, John Collins, and numerous others.

Considering the level of players that have been linked to Boston already, it would be highly surprising if Aldridge was the team’s first, second, or even third option.

Their interest in the big man clearly represents a backup option or even perhaps an interest in the buyout market. The Celtics are 20-18 on the season and sit in the fifth seed of the Eastern Conference.

LaMarcus Aldridge is no longer the go-to scorer that he represented for the majority of his career, but could still emerge as a solid third or fourth option for any contender looking to add depth to their frontcourt.

Aldridge was averaging 14 points and five rebounds per game this season before his injury with the San Antonio Spurs.

What additions or upgrades will the Boston Celtics make at the NBA Trade Deadline? It’s not exactly clear but at this point, it would be surprising if they stood pat without improving the roster one way or another.
