New York Knicks: A blueprint for the 2021 offseason
Free agents the New York Knicks should target
This year’s point guard free-agent class is stacked and I don’t think a trade for one will be as likely as the Knicks trying to go all-in on signing a veteran star. Kyle Lowry, Chris Paul, Goran Dragic, and Mike Conley should be at the top of the wish list, as all four can control the floor, be a primary playmaker, and hit big shots if need be.
Depending on how far the Suns make it, I’m not sure how easy it will be to land CP3, but Lowry and Dragic seem like two choices that will almost definitely sign somewhere new this summer.
Shooting, shooting, and more shooting may be the most important need on the Knicks’ summer checklist. In my opinion, I would like to see them sign two lethal 3-point shooters, and draft one (maybe sign three if they can’t retain Bullock or Burks). J.J. Redick tops my list, a Brooklyn native, that would probably prefer to end his career where he calls home.
Also heading into his age-37 season, he should come at a fairly cheap price. Other names to look at could be Danny Green, Doug McDermott, and Jeff Green.
To address the big man issue will be pretty difficult in free agency, as this year’s big man free agent class looks fairly weak. Mitchell Robinson will be back, Norvel Pelle could have a chance to make the team, and either Taj Gibson or Nerlens Noel will probably be re-signed. If the team were to lose any two of those four, Hassan Whiteside or Gorgui Dieng could be relatively cheap options to back up Robinson.
The final problem that I would like to see addressed in free agency is a two-way wing. The team lacks a talented 3-and-D wing and if Reggie Bullock is not retained, it becomes a huge issue. Kelly Oubre Jr. has been a name that has surfaced that would make a lot of sense, possibly to become the starter while Bullock backs him up. Cheaper options to look at could also be veterans Andre Iguodala and Trevor Ariza.
