NBA Trade Rumors: The Cleveland Cavaliers have begun to explore the trade market for Collin Sexton.

There were rumblings a few weeks ago that the Cleveland Cavaliers could explore a potential trade for Collin Sexton this offseason. It appears there was substance to those original rumblings.

According to a recent report, the Cavs have begun exploring the trade market for Sexton.

This isn’t a surprising revelation by any means. Now that the Cavs are equipped with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, it would make sense for Cleveland to try and trade Sexton (especially if they’re not willing to give him the max extension that he’s likely going to seek).

More from Sir Charles In Charge

Sexton is eligible for an extension this offseason and could test restricted free agency next summer if he fails to agree to an extension with the Cavs. It would be wise for Cleveland to try and get ahead of what could transpire next offseason if they already know they don’t believe he’s a max player.

And considering he’s likely looking for a big-money extension, it could make his trade market a bit confusing. That said, there still should be plenty of teams willing to take a risk on a young, talented player such as Sexton.

Collin Sexton is a really good young player

This past season, Sexton averaged 24 points and four assists on 48 percent shooting from the field and 37 percent shooting from 3-point range. Even though the Cavs didn’t achieve much winning this past season, those numbers are encouraging considering he was able to be that productive on a struggling team.

At the ripe age of 22, Sexton is a player that could be viewed as a foundational player for another franchise. Clearly, the Cavs don’t view him as that. There will be other teams that do. And it’ll be interesting to see how many arise as a trade market for Sexton begins to develop.

The Cavs are in a position where they could be creative heading into the offseason with at a top 3 draft pick and plenty of solid young pieces already on their roster. Though, at least for the time being, it doesn’t appear as if Sexton is a part of the team’s future.
