The Philadelphia 76ers need to tread carefully when it comes to Ben Simmons
The Philadelphia 76ers need to tread carefully with Ben Simmons.
Heading into the offseason, the Philadelphia 76ers are one team that many expect to test the trade waters with a few of their players. As expected, the biggest name of their roster that could be traded this offseason is Ben Simmons.
After another lackluster postseason finish, the Sixers need to shake up their roster and there might not be a better candidate for such a move than Simmons.
Simmons, 24, is a good player with the potential to be great, but simply has relished with the team next to Joel Embiid. It could be a time for a change and if one should arise, it might very well be in the best interest of both parties.
According to a recent report, the Sixers have already begun to hear from teams interested in Simmons via trade.
The Sixers need to tread carefully heading into the offseason when it comes to Simmons. Even though there’s a good chance the Sixers want to shop him during the offseason, there’s also a good chance that Philly won’t find a deal that is to their liking.
I don’t think the Sixers intend on trading Simmons during the offseason just based on the simple fact of trading him. Even though Daryl Morey is not one to sit on a dying asset, I don’t think he’s going to be in the business of cutting bait with a 24-year-old all-star talent just to make a change to the roster.
Though, all these small reports are only going to impact Simmons’ situation with the team more and more. There’s nothing worse in professional sports than a star player coming back after an offseason in which he’s seen his name dragged through trade reports all summer long.
That’s what the Sixers will need to avoid this offseason. Even though the team has said all the right things lately, it’s pretty obvious that Simmons could be moved this summer. Considering that there’s still a good chance that Simmons returns to the Sixers next season (mostly due to the asking price of the team in any deal), Morey needs to work in secret regarding any potential trade shopping.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure if the rest of the league will allow that to happen. Either way, this is certainly a situation in which the Sixers and Morey need to tread carefully.
