NBA Draft Trade Rumors: Should the Cleveland Cavaliers move up to No. 1 overall?

The Detroit Pistons were awarded the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, but there is speculation that they could be open to moving the pick before making a selection. With the draft still weeks away, one team that could emerge as a candidate to trade up to No. 1 is the Cleveland Cavaliers.

According to a recent report, if the price is right, the Cavs would be open to moving up. With as many young players as Cleveland has, they could put together a competitive offer. However, if the Pistons are sold on Cade Cunningham or another player as head and shoulders the best player in this draft, perhaps they wouldn’t be as open to moving the pick.

At least for now, it’s something that the Pistons should, at the very least, be open to exploring.

Cade Cunningham is the unanimous No. 1 pick

Cunningham is considered to be the unanimous No. 1 pick and would likely be the target for any team looking to trade up. Cunningham is coming off an impressive freshman season at Oklahoma State and is the exact prospect you’d want for a new face of the franchise – something that nearly every team selecting in the top 5 is looking for.

For the Cavs, especially if they’re not sold on any of their current young players – including Collin Sexton and Darius Garland – as future faces of the franchise, any option should be on the table if they love Cunningham.

As we’ve seen time and time again, hitting on a top pick has become increasingly important for many of the “small market” teams in the NBA. Especially in a more player-driven NBA, hitting in the draft has been a saving grace for many markets that simply have trouble recruiting players via free agency.

Both the Pistons and Cavs have been examples of that over the last few years. If not for LeBron James being born in Cleveland, the Cavs would still be without a championship.

The Pistons haven’t been relevant since the days of Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton.

These franchises have a lot hanging in the balance heading into the 2021 NBA Draft. And it would be a shame if either one has an opportunity to hit with the No. 1 overall pick.

As the 2021 NBA Draft continues to draw near, keep an eye on the Cavs – in addition to a few other teams – who could potentially make a strong offer to jump to No. 1 overall. Question is, will they conclude that it’s absolutely necessary and worthwhile?
