NBA Rumors: The Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to make a big splash during the offseason.

Over the last few seasons, the Minnesota Timberwolves have oftentimes emerged as a dark horse threat before the season. Then, once the games actually begin, we all remember these are the Minnesota Timberwolves we’re talking about.

They’ve struggled to reclaim relevancy in the Western Conference since Jimmy Butler decided he wanted a trade and the team has yet to recover.

What makes it all the more curious is when you consider just how much talent is on this team’s roster. On paper, the Wolves have talent littered all over the roster. Still, for one reason or another, this is a team that has simply failed to put it all together time and time again.

Led by Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell, and Anthony Edwards, the Wolves have one of the league’s strongest young trios. Though, heading into this offseason, it’s been reported that Minnesota is looking to add a veteran star – via an offseason splash – that would help this team in their attempt to take the next step as a franchise.

One name that has been surfaced as a potential target for the Wolves is Ben Simmons.

Simmons would be a natural fit on the Wolves, especially considering that neither Edwards nor Russell is a true point guard. Simmons is a natural pass-first player and would be able to fill a void in the team’s starting lineup.

Even if the Wolves had to part ways with either Edwards or Russell, you’d have to like the duo of Simmons and Towns as a new foundation for the team.

Even though Simmons has had his struggles over the last couple of seasons, the talent is still very much there and difficult to ignore. Perhaps a change of scenery is exactly what Simmons needs to fully live up to his potential as an NBA player.

Beyond Simmons, it seems as if the Wolves will be sniffing around to make some sort of upgrade to the roster. Considering that the Wolves don’t have a first-round pick this season (it was conveyed to the Golden State Warriors), an upgrade to the roster for the team is going to have to either come via the draft or trade.

The question for the team heading into the offseason will come down to whether or not there’s a “splash move” to be had that would be good enough to significantly raise the ceiling for this team. If the answer is yes, you can bet that the Wolves will do what they can to explore it.
