Pros of trading down in the NBA Draft: Getting an established veteran or future assets

The pros to trading out of the top 3 in the 2021 NBA Draft are quite clear. The Cavs would likely either get a veteran player that could help this team take a step forward next season or additional assets that could help this team expedite their rebuild in the not-so-distant future.

Either way, it would be a win for Cleveland and they’d have to come to the conclusion that whoever is available at No. 3 wouldn’t be able to make the impact that the Cavs are looking for from a top 3 pick.

It would certainly be a move that comes with a bit of risk and one that the front office would absolutely have to be sold on. This is the type of move that could cost jobs and/or reputations. Whatever the decision that the Cavs come to, it would have to be one that would almost certainly be unanimous.
