NBA’s best low-risk, high-reward free agents: Lonzo Ball
This is a low-risk move even if he signs a max contract, I’m serious. Lonzo Ball is one of the most polished young point guards in the league. He’s not the shot-creator or offensive flamethrower that Jamal Murray is nor the defensive machine that Dejounte Murray is. But before I mention how he doesn’t have the comedic chops of Bill Murray (cue the groans!), let’s talk about how Lonzo does anything and everything in between the Murrays.
He also has some of the best vision in the game. At 6-foot-6, he sees angles that the prototypical point guard does not see, and the passes he pulls off are a testament to that. If you need a floor general to run your offense (hi Bulls), Lonzo is the guy. He is perfectly solid on defense. He can get into passing lanes and is switchable with wings. The most concerning aspect of his game coming into the NBA was his shooting…which is far from a concern now. This is his second straight season shooting above average from three including 37.8 percent on EIGHT attempts a game this season.
To recap: Lonzo can run your offense, stay on the floor (and more) defensively in the playoffs, and stretches the floor. I’ve talked about this for weeks and weeks, Lonzo Ball is the perfect all-around point guard to target. And any team should pay him! He’s 23! He can improve considerably during this second contract, and he’s already so good.
