The Boston Celtics would be an intriguing landing spot for Dennis Schroder.

As most of the free agency money has dried up across the league, there’s one big-name free agent that has yet found a landing spot: Dennis Schroder. And he’ll have to make a big decision regarding his future soon.

Should Schroder just accept the most money that’s on the table or should he try to sign a short-term deal with a contender and try to enter free agency next summer again, in hopes of getting that blockbuster deal that simply wasn’t offered this offseason?

If the answer to that question is yes, there’s one team that makes a lot of sense: the Boston Celtics.

Interestingly enough, they’re also a team that has already been linked to him. On a short-term deal, adding Schroder makes sense for the Celtics.

Even though the Celtics have some bright eyes on the next offseason, it would make sense for Boston to try and exhaust all avenues to improve the roster ahead of this season. And adding a point guard as talented as Schroder would be exactly that.

Dennis Schroder would be a fit for the Boston Celtics

Schroder has his faults as a player, especially on the defensive end, he’s still a dynamic offensive player and at the point guard position, that’s not something that the Celtics currently have on its roster.

Kemba Walker was initially intended to be that player for the Celtics but injuries and unavailability prompted Boston to move him this offseason. Schroder would be a swell replacement, even if it is on a short-term deal.

Schroder is coming off a season with the Los Angeles Lakers in which he averaged 15 points and six assists 44 percent shooting from the field. It wasn’t his best season to date, but it also wasn’t as terrible as the lack of free agent interest would suggest.

Using the Celtics as a landing spot to recalibrate interest around the league would be greatly beneficial to Schroder. As it currently stands, the Celtics would be heading into the offseason with Marcus Smart as their starting point guard.

As good as Smart has been for the Celtics over the past few seasons, he’s not a natural point guard and that probably isn’t the ideal role for him at this point in his career. Smart feasts on the defensive end and is much better when he is able to play off other playmakers.

Adding Schroder would take the pressure off of Smart and allow him to play in his element, likely as the sixth man or even starting at the 2-guard.

With the lack of a splashy move this offseason, it wouldn’t be surprising for the Celtics to try and take advantage of a market inefficiency and snag one of the top players in this free agency class without having to shell out the big money or long-term deal.

The Celtics and Schroder could use each other this season and still keep their respective interests in mind heading into next season.
