Washington Wizards: A potential surprise team in the Eastern Conference
While the Washington Wizards – and the rest of the league, for that matter – continue to wait out the Bradley Beal situation, there’s an outside chance that this team could make a move up the Eastern Conference standings this season after a successful offseason.
The Wizards didn’t make any especially splashy moves this offseason, but they did manage to inject some much-needed talent to the roster while also parting ways with Russell Westbrook (who many would argue was a bigger problem than an asset for the team overall).
During the offseason, the Wizards managed to add Spencer Dinwiddie, Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Montrezl Harrell, and Corey Kispert. The Wizards retooled the roster around Beal and could be an interesting team to keep an eye on heading into this season.

Coming off a season in which the Wizards finished as the eighth seed, it will be difficult for this team to take a tangible step forward – especially with how the rest of the East has improved during the offseason.
However, there is a road to progression for this Wizards team. The big question for this team revolves around a player stepping up as Russell Westbrook did toward the end of last season. If someone can help Beal carry the load, perhaps that’s what Dinwiddie’s role will be, there’s no question this team can compete to earn a 5-8 seed in the East.
Kuzma is probably a better player than he’s been given credit for as of late and the same could be said of Harrell, who simply didn’t fit with the Los Angeles Lakers. KCP will give the team some depth on the wing and Kispert is an interesting prospect that will immediately inject some consistent shooting in the rotation.
If some of the Wizards’ young players can also take a step forward, it’s not that outlandish to suggest that this team could be the come-out-of-nowhere surprise in the East this season that, per se, the New York Knicks were last season.
There are more than a few teams that you name off when discussing the best teams in the East, but the Wizards are certainly an intriguing team that could end up having a dark horse type of year in the conference.
And if Beal elects to sign an extension with the team before the start of the season, it could help the front office attempt to make a move that would fall in line with that “splashy” move that many Wizards fans are hoping to see in the not-too-distant future.
