NBA Trade Rumors: Houston Rockets are unlikely to move John Wall this season.

If you thought it was weird when it was reported that the Houston Rockets and John Wall had agreed to part ways, you weren’t alone. It would make sense for Houston to want to trade or part ways with Wall, but there are so many circumstances that will prevent it from happening anytime soon.

For one, Wall still has $90-plus million remaining on his deal (over two seasons) and that includes a $47-plus million player option for next season – and there’s no question that he’s going to be opting into that.

Additionally, not only is Wall on one of the worst contracts in the league today but he’s also no longer in the prime of his career. The contract was outrageous when he was at the top of his game, and you can only guess how much worse it looks now that Wall is somewhat a shell of his former self.

Another key is that the Rockets aren’t likely to attach an asset to get off of Wall’s deal. While Houston would like to move off of Wall, there’s really no urgency for them to do so. There’s not a free agent or a trade target that the Rockets need to make cap space for and they’re essentially in their first year of what appears to be a long rebuild.

Also, there’s already a report attached to that line of thinking:

"According to a person with knowledge of the situation, there are no talks of a buyout and the Rockets are unlikely to move Wall before the trade deadline barring an injury to a team that suddenly needs help at the guard spot."

While the idea of Wall and the Rockets parting ways does make sense and it probably would be best for both parties, it simply isn’t realistic at this point. There’s a better chance that it happens next summer when he becomes an expiring contract and transforms from being a negative asset to a positive one.

The big question is whether or not Wall is willing to sit out an entire season before playing again. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
