Boston Celtics: Best and worst-case scenarios for the 2021-22 season
By Ben Bundy
Worst-case scenario: The Boston Celtics take a step backward.
Let’s change directions now and look at what could happen if things don’t go so smoothly for Boston. The Celtics have flirted with success a couple of times in recent years. During the Tatum/Brown era the team has played in two Eastern Conference Finals, going to at least Game 6 both times. Playoff runs like that show the team is so close to a championship, but it can’t get over the hump.
It isn’t hard to imagine the Celtics taking a fairly large step back this season. A new head coach and having to replace a star point guard could lead to Boston getting off to a slow start, which could lead to frustration and panic within the locker room and front office. If this happens, the team could find itself at the bottom of the playoff race, and another early postseason exit.
Another season of not meeting expectations could lead to more moves being made by the Celtics. Brad Stevens changing roles with the organization was a change that was a long time coming, but it may not be the only change made if Boston doesn’t show signs of improvement this season. It has already been proven that Marcus Smart could be the next Celtic to be moved if things don’t get better. While that may not sound too concerning, it could be an indication of a bigger issue.
The way today’s NBA works if the Celtics don’t show signs of improving then Tatum and Brown could start to consider looking elsewhere for a chance at a title. If the Celtics move in the wrong direction then free agency could become more tempting for the two when each of their contracts end in the coming years.
