Ja Morant is cementing himself as a superstar for the Memphis Grizzlies.
After being crowned as the top rookie during his first year in the league, we saw just how special Ja Morant was. During his sophomore season, we witnessed his growth and the potential of a future superstar as Morant was able to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to the postseason for the first time since 2017.
Now, entering his third season, it appears that the game has slowed down for him immensely for Morant as he has gotten off to a blazing start. Morant currently leads the league in scoring averaging 30.5 points per game as he is making an early case to be in the MVP discussion.
In the first game of the season, Morant dropped 37 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists. In his second game against the LA Clippers, he scored 28 in a six-point victory for the Grizzlies.
So far, the defining performance is the 40-point performance he had against the Los Angeles Lakers even though it was a losing effort. Morant also had double-digit assists with 10 as he is averaging 8.5 on the season as he is on track for career highs in both scoring and assists.
If Morant can sustain and be consistent with his current level of play, he will surely be making his all-star debut. Not only is he a dynamic playmaker who is basically unguardable in isolation but can also get the ball to open teammates as he can make things happen that result in overall team success.
As the ultimate team player and always displaying unselfishness, Morant’s game has vastly improved from his first two seasons especially from behind the arc. During his rookie year, he shot 33.5 percent from downtown and shot 30.3 percent during his sophomore campaign.
Morant has been scorching hot shooting from three so far this season as he is shooting a blistering 45.8 percent. He is also getting to the charity stripe more frequently as he is averaging a career-high 6.5 attempts. Morant has appeared to have gained more confidence in his shot-making ability and has also improved as a skilled penetrator and finisher around the basket.
He is an exciting player to watch who shows so much ingenuity on the floor and has been impressive, to say the least. Morant shows composure in pressure situations and facilitates like a veteran. You just never know what he has up his sleeve and opponents can never guess what he’s going to do.
If you blink an eye, you could miss another highlight dunk or another impressive assist to one of his teammates on the fast break with his elite decision-making. Morant is so crafty in the paint and it often appears that he is literally flying through the air whenever he has an opportunity to throw one down.
He is one of the most electrifying players in the NBA and his impact on the Grizzlies organization has been quite profound as they were expected to continue going through a rebuilding process but Morant has come in and shown that he is capable of being a leader and the face of their franchise as he is just scratching the surface of his potential.
