Darius Garland’s breakout season, and how it impacts the Cavs’ future
Garland’s fit in the Cavs’ future
The Cavs are in a great spot with Garland and this roster as a whole, but they have some tough decisions to make. Most notably – what to do with Collin Sexton. You can probably figure out by now that I’m a believer in Darius Garland and think he should continue getting lead guard reps, but I’m certainly not opposed to keeping SexLand together.
Sexton may not be Garland’s perfect backcourt partner, but the Cavs need another playmaker next to Garland. Ideally, the Cavs should want a big guard who can work as a secondary initiator next to Garland and take the more challenging defensive assignments.
If Isaac Okoro could take some major leaps forward offensively then that would be perfect because of how talented he is defensively, but putting all of their eggs in that basket would probably be foolish.
So maybe it’s Sexton, maybe it’s someone they bring back in a trade for Sexton, or maybe it’s a free agent or draft pick that’s not even on the roster yet. But if I’m running the Cavs (DM me if interested, Dan Gilbert), the only players I’d be married to are Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. Every roster decision they make going forward should be made to maximize the skillsets of those three players.
Cleveland has a chance to build their first non-LeBron James-led contender in 30 years. The core pieces are already in the building, but windows in the NBA always close faster than we think they will. The clock is already ticking.
