Trading Dejounte Murray wouldn’t make much sense for the San Antonio Spurs.

A recent interesting NBA trade rumor has been circling around the San Antonio Spurs and the possibility of them trading Dejounte Murray. But, quite frankly, the rumor doesn’t exactly make much sense.

Murray, an up-and-coming 25-year-old guard, is having the best season of his career thus far. He will be in the running to win the NBA’s Most Improved Player of the Year award, he might be an all-star and should be included in the All-Defensive team.

The Spurs are having a far from a perfect season, but their flaws this year can’t be placed on Murray. He’s been a bright spot for an otherwise forgettable campaign.

Murray has been the best player on the Spurs this season and is unquestionably a key for the team moving forward. He’s one of the few and quite possibly the only foundational building piece that the team has currently on its roster.

If the Spurs have any interest in turning the fortunes of their franchise around, Murray likely plays a key role in doing so.

Murray is arguably the most underrated player in the league; he’s nearly averaging a triple-double. The Spurs have been bad this season but it would make little sense for the team to trade their only valuable piece on the roster.

Based on their performance this season, there’s no question that the Spurs need to make some sort of moves to improve the roster. Though, it would make little sense for them to trade their best player. Especially if they want to avoid going through a full rebuild via tanking.

The Spurs have a long way to go to get back to contention status, there’s no question about that. Although I’m not sure that entails trading the best player on their roster. And that’s exactly what they’d be doing by trading Murray.
