Should the Los Angeles Lakers throw in the towel on the season?

Whether they’re willing to admit it or not, the Los Angeles Lakers have a decision to make. As the Lakers continue to turn in embarrassing and losing results, they have to decide whether it’s worth continuing down this fruitless path.

A best-case scenario for the remainder of the season would have the Lakers winning a spot in the postseason, via the Play-In Tournament, to only lose in a first-round series against the Phoenix Suns. I don’t think anyone expects the Lakers, even if healthy, to upset the team that has been overwhelmingly the best team in the league all season long.

So even if the rest of the season falls perfectly for the Lakers, it will still in all likelihood result in a first-round exit in an embarrassing fashion. Especially considering the expectations that surrounded this team before the season began.

Of course, the alternative isn’t much better. The alternative for the Lakers is to shut both LeBron James and Rusell Westbrook down for the season. They might not even have to do as much for Anthony Davis considering he’s currently on the injury report and if he returns will likely only be available for the final couple of weeks of the season.

At the moment, the Lakers are 27-34 and are clinging to the 9th seed in the Western Conference. They don’t have much hope to move up in the standings and there’s probably a better chance of them falling out of the playoff race entirely.

It’s been a forgettable season for the Lakers and there’s really nothing they could do realistically to salvage it.

It may seem odd or disgraceful to even suggest that the Lakers should throw the towel in on the season but at the same time, it’s probably something they should be weighing. Even as unpopular as it may seem, it’s time for the Lakers to throw in the towel.
