NBA Rumors: The New York Knicks’ master plan revolves around acquiring Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz.

The New York Knicks have been one of the most disappointing teams in the league this season. After making such big strides as a franchise last season, the team took a big step back. They’re not expected to make the postseason and won’t have much momentum heading into next season.

It appears, however, that not all hope is lost. They still have direction as a front office and have big hopes for a future.

According to a recent report, it has been suggested that the Knicks’ master plan in their current build revolves around acquiring Donovan Mitchell away from the Utah Jazz.

There have been some whispers that perhaps there is some growing angst between Mitchell and the Jazz, but nothing of huge substance has been reported. And if the Jazz makes a deep playoff run, all momentum of Mitchell possibly demanded a trade likely goes out the window.

It’s a pipe dream and perhaps one of the most unlikely of pipe dreams. But, at the same time, this is exactly what the Knicks have done over the last couple of decades. All their hopes revolve around acquiring disgruntled stars.

And, unlike other franchises that have thrived with that philosophy (such as the Miami Heat), it simply hasn’t worked out for the Knicks.

Though, if they were to land Mitchell, that would be a huge win for the franchise. Mitchell is a superstar talent and a winning player. However, Mitchell landing with the Jazz still feels – and appears – to be highly unlikely. The good news is that things can change quickly in the NBA.

That said, I’m not sure how effective a rebuilding plan is if the endgame is to simply “acquire a superstar.” Seems like the Knicks have some big questions to answer. Especially considering the step back that the team made this season.
