The Los Angeles Lakers cut their losses
The San Antonio Spurs had arguably their most trade-heavy February in franchise history, collecting first-round picks from the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors, after fetching one from the Bulls last summer in the DeRozan sign and trade.
With apologies to the very very good, probably All-Star-worthy Dejounte Murray, this team has no transcendent superstar and no true path forward. Hence, trading several role players on expiring deals (and McDermott in year two of a fairly priced three-year deal) for Westbrook and a future pick.
For the Lakers, this would be a chance to partially recoup the depth, defense and shooting they lost in the awful Wizards trade. None of these incoming guys are huge net positive assets, but McDermott and Richardson can fill valuable roles at a near-started level.
Langford is mere salary filler. Like with the Pistons trade, the Spurs helping Lakers clear over $15 million in cap space deal factors into this deal.
