The injury to Joel Embiid is not the end of the world, but it’s far from ideal for the Philadelphia 76ers.
In the words of Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers, the good news regarding the Joel Embiid injury is that it “can’t get worse.” However, the fact that Embiid will likely have to go through the rest of the playoffs fighting an injury is far from ideal.
Less than 24 hours after Embiid hit an unbelievable game-winning 3 against the Toronto Raptors in Game 3 to help the Sixers take a commanding 3-0 series lead, it was reported that Embiid was battling pain and discomfort in his right thumb.
It was later described as ligament damage but an MRI will fully show the extent of the injury. Nevertheless, it’s something that Embiid is focused on playing through. But that’s not something that the Sixers would’ve wanted to envision prior to the start of the playoffs.
Generally, for the Sixers, the one qualifier for their playoff chances has always been a healthy Embiid. That is now no longer an option for Philadelphia. Embiid is unlikely to miss games due to this injury, but it’s clear that it’s something he’s going to struggle with.
It’s unknown when the injury actually took place or how long he’s been playing with it, but Embiid has been really good for the Sixers in two out of the first three games. Philadelphia should be able to close out the Toronto Raptors – with or without Embiid.
It is something to watch moving forward for the team, however. If Embiid is hurting and his play begins to reflect that, there’s no question it could prevent this team from making a deep run.
I don’t think we can’t completely count out the Sixers as a contender in the Eastern Conference, but there’s no question that this is an absolute gut punch to their chances.
