NBA Rumors: According to a recent report, the New York Knicks could target point guard Tyus Jones in free agency this offseason.
The New York Knicks are expected to be one of the more aggressive teams during the offseason, especially when it comes to the free-agent market. Among other needs, the Knicks will likely take a hard, strong look at the point guard market.
While the Knicks have already been linked to Jalen Brunson, it appears that there are a couple of other free agent point guards that will be of interest to New York.
According to a recent report, one of the other potential point guards that could pique the Knicks’ interest is Tyus Jones, who is coming off a successful season with the upstart Memphis Grizzlies.
"[via NY Post]Memphis backup point guard Tyus Jones, who played three seasons for Tom Thibodeau in Minnesota, is weaving a career year and is on the Knicks’ radar, according to an NBA source."
Jones is a free agent after this season and could command a healthy-sized contract as a backup point guard. He’s proven he can fill that role with the Grizzlies this season and will likely be a hot commodity during the offseason.
He’s coming off arguably the best statistical season of his career in which he averaged nine points and four assists per game on 45 percent shooting from the field and 39 percent shooting from 3-point range.
Especially for a team like the Knicks that will be in the market for a point guard or two during the offseason, Jones could be of interest. He’s probably more of a rotation player or stopgap for the Knicks but could be an option if some of the other high-end guards are off the board in free agency.
New York should absolutely be looking for a starting point guard this offseason, but if they can’t find one and will be looking to either address the position by committee or draft a long-term solution and will be looking for somewhat of a spot-starter next season, Jones would be a great fit.
Jones will likely have a healthy amount of interest this offseason, and it appears the Knicks will be one of the teams interested.
