NBA Rumors: The Brooklyn Nets are noncommittal on re-signing Kyrie Irving?
NBA Rumors: Based on general manager Sean Marks’ recent comments, it seems as if the Brooklyn Nets remain noncommittal on re-signing Kyrie Irving this offseason. Is that smart?
After a disappointing first-round NBA Playoff end to their season, the Brooklyn Nets have a lot to think about this offseason. And one of the biggest decisions that need to be made is whether or not the team is going to re-sign Kyrie Irving.
While it may seem like a foregone conclusion on the surface, especially since Kevin Durant and Kyrie seem close, Nets’ general manager didn’t make it sound that way speaking to reporters Wednesday afternoon.
According to Marks, it sounds like something that the team will have to figure out over the next couple of months.
"[via ESPN]“So he has to look at what he’s going to do with his player option, and so forth like that. I think we know what we’re looking for. We’re looking for guys that want to come in here and be part of something bigger than themselves. Play selfless, play team basketball and be available — and that goes not only for Kyrie but for everybody here.”"
Of course, that final sentence could be viewed as a jab in Kyrie’s direction, no matter what Marks says. Kyrie elected to make a decision that didn’t let him be a part of the team during the first half of the season. Then, he became a part-time player before he got full clearance towards the end of the season and into the playoffs.
But there’s no question that not having Kyrie available during the first half of the season certainly hurt the team. Especially during the stretch of the season in which Kevin Durant was out and James Harden was struggling to look like his old self.
Kyrie does have a player option and could make this all moot if he opts in. Though, that would be surprising and he will likely force the issue on signing him long-term. If the Nets aren’t open to that, there’s a good chance we could see Kyrie hit the free agency market this offseason.
The Nets have some interesting decisions to make this offseason, and it goes well beyond what ends up happening with Kyrie.
