NBA Trade Rumors: According to a recent report, the Cleveland Cavaliers could look to target Andrew Wiggins via trade during the offseason.
The Golden State Warriors are back in the NBA Finals, their sixth appearance in the last eight years. However, they could be a team that will be looking to make a change to their roster (mostly due to financial reasons) after the season – no matter what happens in the NBA Finals.
One player that could be a cap casualty for the team is Andrew Wiggins.
And if the Warriors go down that path, there will be a healthy market for Wiggins. One team that has been linked to Wiggins is the Cleveland Cavaliers, and they could revisit that interest during the offseason according to a recent report.
Of course, if the Warriors were to win a championship this season, it would be highly surprising for the team to explore trading him during the offseason. I would assume that they would want to do everything in their power to try to repeat as champs. And Wiggins has been a big reason for their success this season, especially in the playoffs.
Though, they do have a large amount of cap on their books and will likely have to start paying/extending some of their other rising contributors – such as Jordan Poole and James Wiseman. Draymond Green may also be looking for an extension after this season. He’s essentially an expiring contract next season and will likely be looking to cash in on one more big payday.
Golden State can’t pay everyone and Wiggins is likely going to be in line for a huge contract when he hits the open market – which would be next offseason. He’s still just 27 years old and is playing some of the best basketball of his career right now.
If he remains at this pace, there’s a very good chance he’s going to get a huge contract when he hits the open market. And it likely isn’t going to come from the Warriors.
Perhaps the Warriors elect to trade him this offseason. If they do, there are many teams that should be interested in his services. Including a rising team such as the Cleveland Cavaliers.
