NBA Rumors: According to a recent report, there’s a growing expectation that Deandre Ayton has played his final game with the Phoenix Suns.
The Phoenix Suns‘ season came to an abrupt end when they lost in Game 7 on their home floor to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference semifinals. It was equally surprising as it was embarrassing.
Nevertheless, heading into the offseason, the Suns have some big decisions to make regarding their future. It will be extremely difficult, especially considering this team was just two wins away from a championship just two seasons ago.
The biggest decision that the Suns need to make is in regard to Deandre Ayton, who will be a restricted free agent this offseason.
But according to one report, there’s a growing sense that he’s played his final game for the Suns.
If this report is indeed accurate, this type of move would qualify as a “blockbuster.” If it were to get done, there would be some significant assets being transferred. Even in a sign-and-trade scenario, the Suns would likely get a solid return.
However, as a whole, the team would likely take a significant step back. Even if Phoenix doesn’t agree that Ayton is a max player, there’s no debating that he’s a really good and impactful one. He’s coming off a season in which he averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds on 63 percent shooting from the field and 37 percent shooting from 3 (on an extremely small sample size).
Ayton is the prototypical 7-footer that plenty of teams would jump at the opportunity to land. It would make sense to trade one away, especially with the Suns being this close to a title. But that decision may have already been made last offseason when the team originally refused to give him a max extension.
This should be an interesting summer all around, especially down in Phoenix.
