NBA Trade Rumors: With the expectation that the Miami Heat will miss out on the big fish, could they target Myles Turner as a backup option?
The Miami Heat has elected to go all-in on Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell this offseason and it, unfortunately, hasn’t paid off. Sooner rather than later, the Heat is going to have to pivot toward plan c or d.
One player that would make sense for the Heat to perhaps target is Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner, who the team has been open to trading dating back to last season.
The Pacers are looking for a future first-round pick for Myles Turner or perhaps something that represents a first-round pick. Could the Heat look to the Pacers and view Turner as a potential backup plan after missing out on Mitchell and Durant?
I don’t think that’s something we should completely toss out the window. Turner is in the final year of his contract with the Pacers and it doesn’t seem like he will re-sign with the team. Turner would be a theoretical fit next to Bam Adebayo and would offer the Heat some rim protection that they simply haven’t had since their fallout with Hassan Whiteside.
The big question is whether or not the Heat would want to part way with the asset it will take to land Turner. And that’s not a foregone conclusion, especially if they want to continue to pursue “whales” over the course of the next year.
Either way, it’s an option that the Heat could end up pursuing heading into training camp. Unless the plan is for Caleb Martin to be the starting power forward, there’s still some work that the Heat’s front office must take care of. And perhaps Turner is part of that work.
