The Miami Heat may play the waiting game when it comes to a Tyler Herro contract extension.

The Miami Heat still seems to be willing to play the waiting game. With roughly a month until the start of training camp, Miami still hasn’t made an upgrade to the roster this offseason and seems intent on running it back next season.

One huge task on the Heat’s to-do list this offseason involves signing Tyler Herro to a contract extension. He will be entering the final year of his rookie year but is eligible for a rookie-scale extension.

And if the Heat wants to avoid seeing him test the restricted free agent market, it would be smart for the team to re-sign him to an extension this summer. Though, according to a recent report, there’s no urgency for the Heat to ink Herro to an extension right now.

Tyler Herro could be a trade chip for the Miami Heat at the NBA Trade Deadline

It makes sense to a certain extent for the Heat to hold off on a contract extension for Herro. If the Heat truly believes it could pull off a blockbuster deal at any point before the NBA Trade Deadline, there’s no benefit to extending Herro anytime soon.

A Herro extension would complicate all that. At the same time, if the Heat doesn’t extend Herro this offseason, it could open the door to potential issues in the relationship.

Perhaps similar to what we saw this offseason between the Phoenix Suns and Deandre Ayton. That’s something the Heat probably don’t, or shouldn’t, want on their hands.

Nevertheless, it would be surprising if the Heat didn’t do what’s in the best interest of the Heat. And if that means holding out for a potential deal to come to fruition either during the season or at the trade deadline, Miami is going to do it.

Whether or not it ends up being the wrong decision doesn’t really matter. If there’s even a 1 percent chance that the Heat can hit on one of these blockbuster deals, we may not see a Herro extension until next summer.

It’s a give and take and it remains to be seen how this will all work out. The deadline for the Heat and Herro to agree to an extension is mid-October.
