NBA Trade Rumors: According to a recent report, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks held Collin Sexton sign-and-trade talks.

After making a run to the Western Conference Finals, it’s a shame that the Dallas Mavericks will have to overcome the loss of one of their key players, Jalen Brunson. Even with one of the best players in the league, Luka Doncic, it won’t be easy for the Mavs to replicate some of that same success from last season.

That said, there is one player that is still on the open market that the team could look to target. Collin Sexton remains on the open market and could be a natural fit in Dallas at a position of need.

According to a recent report, the Mavs and Cleveland Cavaliers have held sign-and-trade talks for Sexton, who remains on the restricted free agent market.

Sexton and the Cavs are reportedly far apart from a potential deal and exploring an outside contract is something that Sexton has to be considering. Though, there hasn’t been much success (obviously) on that front.

At least from a basketball standpoint, the Mavs should be interested in Sexton.

Even though Sexton missed practically all of last season due to injury, he is one season removed from averaging 24 points and four rebounds on 47 percent shooting from the field and 37 percent shooting from 3-point range. Add in the fact that he’s still just 23 years old, and the lack of interest from around the league in Sexton is quite peculiar.

Sexton makes a lot of sense for the Mavs. After losing Jalen Brunson during free agency to the New York Knicks, there is going to be a gap at the point guard position. And losing 16 points per game on the offensive end won’t be easy to replace.

Not to mention another ball handler next to Luka. And, on the surface, the comparisons between Sexton and Brunson are quite interesting. Both are on-ball scorers and are dynamic off the dribble.

Though, as this report echoes, there’s not much that the Cavs would want from the Mavs in a possible sign-and-trade. That’s where this possibility falls apart.

It’ll be interesting to see how this offseason ends for Sexton. Will he play on the qualifying offer, will he take a low offer deal from the Cavs, or will he find a soft landing spot on another team?
