NBA Rumors: There is a belief that the New York Knicks may be more willing to trade RJ Barrett than Quentin Grimes?

It’s the worst kept secret in the NBA that the New York Knicks are trying to finalize a trade for Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell. Though, at least for now, it doesn’t appear like a deal is close. And there’s no guarantee that will change at any point this season.

Still, the overwhelming expectation is that the Knicks are going to try to land Mitchell. From what we know about the Jazz’s asking price, they want a boatload of picks and young players. And one player that the Jazz reportedly like is Quentin Grimes.

Should the New York Knicks value Quentin Grimes over RJ Barrett?

However, according to a recent report, there’s a belief that the Knicks would rather trade RJ Barrett than Quentin Grimes.

Barrett is coming off a season in which he averaged 20 points, six rebounds, and three assists per game on 41 percent shooting from the field. Although, he’s due for a rookie-scale extension this offseason. And if doesn’t sign one, he’ll be in line to hit restricted free agency next summer.

Despite all his criticism, Barrett will likely garner a max extension if he hits the open market. And that could possibly be something the Knicks may want to avoid. He’s a really good player but wants to be paid as a star-caliber player. New York may not agree.

On the other hand, Grimes is a player that could be on the verge of a breakout season. Even more so if he’s given a bigger role with the team this year. Grimes is under the Knicks’ control for the next three years – with a team option over the next two years (not counting this season).

Grimes could be a manageable deal that would fit with a contending team – which the Knicks would be if they found a way to land Mitchell. Though, I’m not sure if there’s an avenue to get Mitchell that doesn’t involve Grimes going to the Jazz.

Either way, it’s an interesting angle to follow. Perhaps this is nothing more than posturing from the Knicks and/or the Jazz.

Grimes is an interesting prospect that will likely only gain more traction as the season goes on, especially if he’s the main ingredient in a blockbuster trade or a player that prevents it from going through.
