Donovan Mitchell may thrive under less pressure with the Cleveland Cavaliers
All eyes will certainly be on Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers once the 2022-23 NBA season begins, but I think an argument can be made that he will be under less pressure this season than he was under during his time with Utah. Especially over the last couple of years.
The Jazz was a championship contender that never actually contended during the Mitchell-Rudy Gobert era in Utah. They continually fell short in the postseason and it ultimately led to the demise of their core. In Cleveland, they won’t be under that same pressure. At least not initially.
Even though the Cavs did give up three future first-round picks and two pick swaps, they will not be considered a top 3 team in the East when the season starts. For better or worse, they’ll be able to develop and grow together before having to play up to big expectations.
And Mitchell playing under less pressure could untap the remaining potential that he needs to make the convincing jump to superstardom in the league. Cleveland has potential. They’re not a championship contender yet. And that is something that will make them a dangerous dark horse this season.
