NBA Trade Rumors: After agreeing to a new contract extension, will the Detroit Pistons decide to keep or trade Bojan Bogdanovic?

In somewhat a surprising move, the Detroit Pistons and Bojan Bogdanovic agreed to a two-year contract extension. It’s not so much a surprising move from Bogdanovic’s point of view, but it is for the Pistons. Detroit acquired Bogdanovic from the Utah Jazz before the start of the season.

Bogdanovic wanted an extension. But I’m not really sure how this extension falls in line with the Pistons’ plans moving forward. Does this mean the Pistons don’t plan on trading Bogdanovic? Or will this move help them find a better offer for him?

It should be noted, despite the extension, there are no trade restrictions on Bogdanovic. That means, if they wanted, the Pistons could still trade him at or before this year’s NBA Trade Deadline. But there’s no question that this extension adds another layer to the possibilities.

What options will the Detroit Pistons have with Bojan Bogdanovic?

There are a few options that the Pistons will have with Bogdanovic. For one, they could keep him on for the remainder of the season. Detroit is already benefitting from having him on the roster. He’s a valuable veteran to have in the locker room and is currently the team’s leading scorer so far this season.

Detroit is just 2-5 so far this season but if they could climb into the race for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, perhaps even a spot in the Play-In Tournament, there’s no question that a player like Bogdanovic would certainly help on that front.

Another option for the Pistons could be to trade him at the deadline, even more so if it becomes clear that they are not going to be in the running for a playoff spot in the East. In that case, extending him for two more seasons could make him an even better asset for the Pistons.

They won’t be selling Bogdanovic as an expiring contract anymore. Instead, they’ll be able to trade him as a player under contract. The hope would be that it would bring back a bigger return for the Pistons if they decided to go down that path.

This move also gives the Pistons the opportunity to keep Bogdanovic this season and then make a decision in the future on a potential trade. Either way, what this extension does for the Pistons is that it gives them options and time.
