Step 2 – Trade Kyle Lowry

Looking back, the acquisition of Kyle Lowry two offseasons will go down as one of the biggest mistakes that this franchise has made during the Jimmy Butler build. In theory, he was a good move but he hasn’t looked anything like the player that the Heat believed they were getting two years ago.

It’s time for the Heat to move on. Even if the team has to take a loss on moving him. The goal here is not to improve the roster. The goal for the Heat in trading Lowry is to get out from under that contract. Even if Miami has to staple an additional asset, this is a move that the Heat should get done. And preferably at this year’s NBA Trade Deadline.

A couple of teams that could make sense for Lowry are the Los Angeles Lakers (in a deal that includes Russell Westbrook) and Dallas Mavericks. If none of those two teams are willing to bite, perhaps the Heat will need to send Lowry to a team with the necessary cap space. But that would cost Miami to send a first-round pick, you’d have to imagine.
