NBA Trade Rumors: Perhaps not at this year’s NBA Trade Deadline, but the Dallas Mavericks could soon explore making a move for Deandre Ayton.
It’s quite clear that the Dallas Mavericks likely need to make an upgrade before the NBA Trade Deadline if they’re going to have a good shot at making another deep run in the Western Conference playoffs. For as great as Luka Doncic is, he needs help.
However, there’s a sense that perhaps the Mavs may wait until the offseason to make the big splash that many are expecting – or hoping – that they make. For a multitude of reasons, it simply may not be in the cards for the Mavs to make a roster-altering move at this year’s NBA Trade Deadline.
Though, that likely won’t still be the case once the offseason arrives. In fact, according to a recent report, there is one name that could emerge as a “down the line” trade target for the Mavs – Deandre Ayton.
Ayton ultimately re-signed with the Suns during the offseason but he clearly was ready to move on as he signed an offer sheet with Indiana. It was only then that Phoenix matched it. And with the uncertainty that revolves around the Suns’ future, would it really be surprising if they eventually decided to move on from Ayton? No. And in that scenario, it would make sense for a team like the Mavs to be interested.
The Dallas Mavericks must make a big move soon to appease Luka Doncic
Whether it ends up being Ayton or another star, one thing is certain. The Mavs need to do everything in their power to try to land another star opposite Luka. The last thing Dallas needs is a disgruntled superstar. And there have been whispers that Luka has been pressuring the front office to make a move.
And with how aggressive the Mavs have been in the past, it shouldn’t be a surprise. Dallas generally does get in on available stars. They haven’t been able to close the deal on many of them but it’s clear that their front office tries.
However, as we’ve seen in the past, sometimes effort is not good enough in the NBA. Especially when it comes to appeasing superstars. But that’s something that the Mavs must figure out between next week’s NBA Trade Deadline and the start of next season.
I can’t imagine that Luka will be very happy if there isn’t a big upgrade to the team by the start of next season. And, who knows, maybe part of that plan does involve Ayton.
