NBA Rumors: Kyrie Irving is still being linked to the Los Angeles Lakers
NBA Rumors: Even though Kyrie Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, there are still many around the NBA that believe he will eventually land in LA.
A few days before what would end up being one of the most chaotic NBA Trade Deadlines in recent history, Kyrie Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. In a somewhat surprising move, the Mavs decided to go all-in on this season in hopes of finding some magic by adding a second star next to Luka Doncic.
And through two games, it has worked out quite well. In two games with the Mavs, Kyrie has looked quite good and has helped Dallas go 2-0 even with Luka still out with an injury. However, despite the strong start for Kyrie in Dallas, the whispers of his potential offseason decision have not quieted.
Per The Athletic’s Joe Vardon, he still believes that Kyrie will be a Los Angeles Laker next season. It’s an interesting post-trade deadline comment and I’m not sure that’s something that Vardon would just say unless he had some information behind it.
Kyrie Irving can test free agency during the offseason
Even as Kyrie heads into a new stage of his career with the Mavs and Luka, it doesn’t seem as if the noise surrounding his potential free agency decision is going to calm down anytime soon. Perhaps for the playoffs, but there are already whispers that he could still end up in Los Angeles.
And I suppose that was only strengthened after LeBron James did an entire interview professing his discontent with the Lakers not being able to acquire Kyrie before the trade deadline.
Los Angeles did manage to retool their roster even without Kyrie, but it’s clear that LeBron wanted the team to do something bigger. They couldn’t pull it off and perhaps the bigger move will have to wait until the offseason.
And such a bigger move could mean one for Kyrie, who will be a free agent after this season. Depending on how his experience with Dallas goes, it’s really impossible to predict what awaits Kyire during the offseason.
Nevertheless, it appears that the Lakers are going to linger. As long as LeBron wants them to. And if Kyrie does emerge as an option during the offseason, it would be a good bet that Kyrie ends up in LA.
The next few months will dictate what happens for Kyrie next. I think it’s safe to say that both the Mavs and Lakers have a lot to play.
